This week was all about COLLABORATE 16 for me. I bought my flights to Vegas on Virgin Atlantic thanks to Lucy, a Virgin Pilot friend of mine. Booked the hotel room at the Delaney, asked my mates on Facebook where to party in Vegas, joined IOUG (finally). Now I really should book my conference ticket!
See you there?
Live SQL
I’m not sure when this came out, but it’s awesome….
Oracle on Github
Nice to see the out of the box schema definitions on Github. This is one of dozens of projects in the Github, check them out…
Real Racing 3
If you like the Real racing 3 game, which I seem to have become addicted to, then join me in the team OBIE. Maybe see you online?
I thought it was time we did a special guest feature, not had one since the brilliant Jeff Mcquigg, let me introduce to you the talented and all round nice guy…..
Read the story of The The Vine City Code Crew here and read about some of the sessions
For those who don’t know, Jeremy Harms works for Emerald Cube Solutions and is the founding member of The Vine City Code Crew. This crew is comprised of boys and girls who live in and around the historic but under-resourced Vine City neighborhood in west Atlanta who are learning to code for free with Jeremy and a host of other great volunteers.
Because Jeremy had the foresight to use Codecademy, he put all of the coding classes online. You can find them here.
If you want to know how you can help this great project. Reach out to Jeremy as he’s willing to share what he’s learned. If you live locally, he needs helpers at every class. And if you’d like to donate to the cause, here is the donation website.
Read much more about it all here.
Blogs of the week
This blog by Jonathan Lewis writes, “I will be writing about “massive deletes” for AllthingsOracle in the near future, but I thought I’d expand on the comment about not reclaiming space straight away. The key point is this – when you drop a column you are probably dropping a small fraction of each row. ”
Brendan Tierney says of the BIWA Summit, “Over the 3 days there is an action packed agenda of 5 parallel tracks, plus a full 3 days of Hands-on Labs. The agenda is filled with the whos-who of the Oracle BI and Analytics world.”

7. Histograms on data (not the optimizer)
Connor McDonald writes, “I’ve been doing a series on Analytics here but if you need to group data into ranges, you don’t necessarily need a fancy analytic. The function WIDTH_BUCKET can easily determine histogram groupings within a table.”
8. BIWA Summit : HOL notes for ODM using SQL
Brendan Tierney shares some HOL notes for ODM using SQL for attendees of the BIWA Summit
Jonathan Lewis writes, “I thought I had written this note a few years ago, on OTN or Oracle-L if not on my blog, but I can’t find any sign of it so I’ve decided it’s time to write it (again)!”
10. ODI and its Repository – Introduction
Peter Scott blogs, “Back in December I presented a new conference talk on Oracle Data Integrator in a DevOps world. The slides are available from the TECH 15 conference part of the UKOUG website, or if you are not a member, contact me and I’ll see if I can get them to you.”
