Upgrade Oracle Restart to 18c

Liron Amitzil begins by saying, “It seems like there are not many Oracle Restart environments (or there are but Oracle doesn’t pay too much attention to them). Otherwise, I can’t explain why I couldn’t find too much information about it in the documentation when it comes to upgrades. So, to help all of you out there that do use it, here are some notes about the upgrade process.”

2. How to Create a Basic Parameter in Looker Using a Liquid Variable

Kristi Smith explains, “Parameters in Looker increase interactivity for users and provide flexibility from the front end perspective without having to write custom code for each and every field the user asks for. A parameter creates a filter-only field that can be added as a filter when exploring, but cannot be added to the result set. The parameter allows the user to dynamically make a selection via the filter and change the dimension being displayed in the visualization. The user is able to quickly and easily adjust the data being displayed based on their preference, but what’s actually happening on the back-end is that once they make their change, they are re-writing the SQL logic to accommodate for that change.”

Rich Clayton quotes Stewart Bryson, “With Oracle Analytics Cloud, you get best-of-breed data visualization and cloud connectivity while still being able to satisfy your enterprise use cases—all in a single solution,” Bryson says. “Other offerings, such as Microsoft Power BI, require you to purchase multiple products to satisfy enterprise use cases and perform just-in-time modeling. And even after you purchase those products, you might need to spend time and resources on configuration and integration before you’ll realize any value from your investment.”

5. Oracle 19c: Auto-List Partitioning HIGH_VALUE Bugs fixed

Dani Schnider writes: “New features are one reason to upgrade to a new Oracle release, bug fixes of known bugs are another one. With Oracle 19c, at least two bugs related to Automatic List Partitioning were fixed. I did some tests with Auto-List Partitioning on an Oracle 19.3 database.”

6. Auto Resize and Shrink ACFS Volumes

Marco Mischke says, “Today I want to write a little about ACFS. In case you are using the latest and greatest Oracle Grid Infrastructure and you still run 11.2 databases, you are required to use ACFS. This especially applies to the Database Appliances, ExaDatas and for the Cloud Services, if you use Grid Infrastructure there. Having that, you might run into situations where your ACFS filesystem grows which it does automatically. But what if you want to shrink the filesystem to it’s original or at least a smaller size? With version 18.3 this should work quite well. Version before did had some issues when there was no contigous free space at the end of the volume to do the shrinking. 7. “Hear ye, hear ye!”

David Fitzjarrell begins by saying, “In versions of Oracle prior to 12.2 the Listener has been more forgiving with static registrations; with 12.2 and later releases that seems to have changed as static registrations, if not configured completely, can cause the listener to dump a core file in the directory where the listener process was started. What can make this even more confusing is that dynamic registrations are not affected. And to add to all of this interesting behavior having databases down when starting the listener doesn’t ‘fix’ the problem because the listener isn’t connecting to a running database, it’s trying to resolve library paths for static declarations. Let’s look at how static registrations can be written to avoid this (and allow one to keep his or her hair and sanity in the process).”

8. Add Application Insights to an Existing ASP.NET Core Application
